About Us

Thalassemia is indeed a significant genetic blood disorder characterized by the body's inability to produce adequate hemoglobin, leading to severe anemia. It is an inherited condition, passed down from parents to their offspring through genes. This disorder predominantly affects individuals of Italian, Greek, Middle Eastern, Southern Asian, and African descent. globally, it is estimated that approximately 4.6 million children and adolescents live with Thalassemia, and each day, hundreds of babies are born with this condition. Various factors contribute to the spread and impact of Thalassemia, including limited access to education, social and religious stigmatization, and a general lack of useful information and awareness about the disorder.efforts to address Thalassemia involve enhancing public awareness, providing better education and resources, and promoting genetic counseling and testing to manage and potentially reduce the prevalence of this disorder.

Activities

The Trust provides the following services and facilities to Thalassemic children and their family members who visit us fortnightly. Families travel from various corners of the State and spend the entire day at the center, from morning till evening.

Day Care Centre Facilities

The center is established with the aforementioned facilities in a two-storied school building in the Asarwa area, leased by AMC in the year 2016/17. The Trust has recruited trained staff for various functions including office administration, kitchen operations, housekeeping, cleaning, and maintaining all facilities of the Day Care Centre. For running the (BT) Centre, a doctor, nursing staff, and a coordinator are recruited by SIF Bangalore. Thus, all necessary measures are taken to ensure smooth operations and a vibrant process.

Blood Donation Camps

The team of the Trust regularly organizes blood donation camps with the help of NGOs, societies, business groups, professional associations, industries, and individuals through our Blood Bank Project Partners. The primary goal is to replace the quantity of blood supplied to the Trust for transfusions to children suffering from Thalassemia Major. We proudly note that the Blood Coordination team of the Trust has, on average, held four camps a month for over five years and collected units of blood.

Blood Transfusion

Two Blood Banks, Sarvoday Charitable Blood Centre and Prathma Blood Centre, have joined us as Project Partners to provide blood for our children. Both Banks supply the required blood after completing the formalities of taking samples and performing cross-matching. Our team replaces the blood units at both Blood Banks by organizing blood donation camps. The Centre started in 2019-20. About 75+ patients visit the Centre regularly every 15-20 days. we ensure that children receive the best possible care and support.

Bone Marrow Transplant

Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) is the only proven remedy to fully cure a child suffering from Thalassemia Major. Over the past three years, the Trust has offered free HLA Typing to children and their families, with support from Sankalp India Foundation, Bangalore. These test camps are periodically held at the Centre, and samples are sent to a specialized lab outside the country. Upon receiving a matching report of a child with a sibling, the child is prepared for BMT. Once a child undergoes transplantation with the bone marrow of a sibling, after a period of about 4 to 6 months of isolation, treatment, and medication, the child becomes normal. We are proud to announce that during these three years, about 18 children from the Centre have undergone the BMT procedure at Sankalp-CIMS BMT Centre, Ahmedabad, with many more awaiting the procedure.

Laboratory Tests and Medicines

Children suffering from Thalassemia Major who are registered at our Day Care Centre undergo regular and comprehensive medical monitoring. The team of medical experts conducts various tests at specified intervals to maintain their health and monitor their condition effectively. The Trust adheres to the government's policy of providing free medicines to children with Thalassemia Major through government hospitals. However, due to occasional shortages or unavailability of required medicines at these hospitals, the Trust ensures that the necessary medications are provided directly at the Centre. By maintaining regular monitoring and ensuring access to medications, we strive to improve the quality of life and health outcomes for children living with Thalassemia Major.

Donation Schemes

The Thalassemia Day Care Centre in Ahmedabad is committed to providing all facilities, services, and activities completely free of cost to Thalassemic children and their families. The Trust does not levy any charges on parents. Despite the substantial costs involved in providing these essential services and running the activities, the Trust manages to sustain its operations through the generous contributions and support of esteemed donors. This commitment ensures that Thalassemic children receive comprehensive care and support without any financial burden on their families, helping to improve their quality of life and health outcomes.

There are two main forms of Thalassemia
Thalassemia Minor & Thalassemia Major

In minor Thalassemia, treatment may not be required. People with Thalassemia minor dont usually have any symptoms. If they do, its likely to be minor anemia and fatigue. To cope with anemia and fatigue, a low-fat plant based diet and regular exercising would help. In major Thalassemia, apart from a low fat plant based diet, regular blood transfusions are must to treat anemia. This involves blood being given through a tube inserted into a vein in your arm. Its usually done in hospital and takes a few hours each time. Blood transfusions are very safe, but they can cause too much iron to build-up in the body. Usually people with Thalassemia major do not survive after the age of 30. If only the treatment is been followed perfectly, they do have a chance of living till the age of 50-60 max. Treatment to remove excess iron caused by regular blood transfusions is known as Chelation Therapy. Its very important because high level of iron in the body can damage organs. Thalassemia major can also sometimes cause a number of other problems, including.
